Instead of New Year’s resolutions, Lil Nas X is starting off the year to highlight how far he's come since 2019.

On Thursday, the 20-year-old, whose real name is Montero Hill, posted two videos on Instagram with the caption “These two videos are exactly 365 days apart. (watch till the end)."

In the first video, Lil Nas X said the date is January 8, 2019, and his hit song “Old Town Road” is just a month old.

“Right now, I’m at what 3k on Instagram, 2k on YouTube, not even 1k followers on Spotify, I don’t think,” he said. “But I’ma hit y’all a year from now and see where I’m at."

At the time of the video, the Atlanta native was a college dropout living on his sister's floor. But little did he know his hit song was about to propel him into stardom.

Exactly a year later, in the second video, Lil Nas X is donning an all-white coat, giving Diana Ross in Maghony energy, and still eating pizza while giving us his current social stats.

"I'm at five million on Instagram, eight million on YouTube, and around 30 million listeners on Spotify. And I just want to give a big thank you to everybody who helped to get me where I am and I'll be back with you guys in 10 years from now and we'll see where I'm at" he said.

“Old Town Road,” which is now the longest-reigning #1 hit in the 61-year history of the Billboard Hot 100, was created from a beat that Lil Nas X bought for $30. After adding his Black boy magic to the lyrics, the song was released independently on Soundcloud in December of 2018. As the hit started gaining traction, Columbia Records began negotiations and signed him in the following months.

Not only did "Old Town Road" climb the Billboard Hot 100 charts, but it also began to climb the country charts. This was followed by pushback from some country music fans who thought the artist didn’t represent the true nature of country music. Billboard later pulled the song from their charts.

In April 2019, after a short Twitter exchange with Lil Nas X, Billy Ray Cyrus disagreed with Billboard removing the song from the country charts and said it “means you’re doing something great! Only outlaws are outlawed. Welcome to the club!”

It wasn't until Cyrus was featured on the remix of the hit that it began to receive rodeo cred.

If Lil Nas X's success wasn't enough to convince people that the artist is carving out his own lane, on the last day of pride month he came out as gay. In a post on Twitter, he said he thought he "made it obvious” with his album artwork.

Even with all the success, Lil Nas X still has humility, confidence and vision that's shinning as bright as his grill, and we're here for every minute of it.
