27 years after its premiere on FOX, Living Single is revered by fans and critics alike as both a classic and the blueprint for shows like Friends, Girlfriends and Insecure.
Two key markers of the show are the classic theme song sung by Queen Latifah, who portrayed Flavor editor Khadijah James, and the opening intro that featured the mysterious dancer performing hard-hitting choreography. Well, those iconic dance moves we grew up watching belong to none other than Leslie “Big Lez” Segar.
In a 2018 interview with Essence Grant for BuzzFeed, Segar revealed more details about her role in Living Single‘s opening intro.
“When I recorded Living Single I was a spry 24-year-old. It was shot by Otis Sallid, who had worked with Spike Lee, and he asked me to shoot this to whet their appetite,” she told Buzzfeed. “Neither one of us had the job when we shot it, but they loved it, kept it and now it is TV history.”
A well-known name in the world of hip hop, Segar is also known as a radio DJ and television host. Segar was the first and only woman to host of BET’s Rap City and has choreographed music videos for the likes of Mary J. Blige, Bobby Brown, LL Cool J, Salt-N-Pepa and Michael Jackson.
