The pandemic was a catalyst for many companies to re-think their social responsibility efforts.

DoorDash used Project DASH, a pre-pandemic initiative that addresses hunger relief, to provide even more support for communities affected by COVID-19.

The flagship social impact project, which launched in 2018, leverages the platform’s technology to broaden food access. In 2020, when communities were adhering to shelter-in-place orders, DoorDash expanded Project DASH to deliver food and supplies to vulnerable communities. The company partnered with local governments, nonprofits and organizations that support seniors, children and those experiencing food insecurity to deliver food. DoorDash also provided dashers with personal protective equipment, telehealth access and discounted virtual urgent care visits. In the first three weeks of the expanded program, dashers delivered more than 150,000 meals. By the end of 2020, 6.5 million meals were delivered through Project DASH.

DoorDash also partnered with United Way Worldwide and local chapters of the organization to deepen the effort of Project DASH. Suzanne McCormick, president of United Way Worldwide’s U.S. division, said, “Project DASH has been an incredible partner in this work and has helped us achieve hundreds of thousands of deliveries representing millions of meals. Food-related calls to 211 for help have increased by 150% over the last year, and United Way will continue to find innovative ways to combat food insecurity in our local communities.”

In 2022, DoorDash worked with New York City-based nonprofit Masbia to get kosher food to Orthodox Jewish families living in food deserts in Brooklyn and Queens. More than 33 million deliveries of meals, groceries, household goods and school supplies have been made through Project DASH since it launched, and DoorDash is working to increase partnerships with food banks and food pantries in America.

Project DASH is just one way DoorDash continues to create new tools and resources to meet needs in local economies. Learn more about the social impact of DoorDash:
