Idris Elba has been setting fire to the screen, and women’s loins, since his breakout role as drug kingpin Russell “Stringer” Bell in HBO’s critically acclaimed drama The Wire.

He’s racked up impressive credits since then, and his dating history has provided many conversations for gossip blogs and Twitter. One of his exes, R&B and reality TV mainstay K. Michelle, once said of their relationship in an interview with Hollywood Unlocked that, “He said I would be taken care of, I would be fine but he would never commit to one woman.” Elba’s feelings on commitment must’ve changed because he proposed to then-girlfriend Sabrina Dhowre in 2018 at a London movie theater. They were married a year later, as Blavity previously reported.

Even though we know plenty about People's 2018 Sexiest Man Alive, here are five things to know about Sabrina Dhowre Elba.

1. She’s a Howard alumna.

Dhowre has lived in a few places, and one of them is Washington D.C. where she attended Howard University. She graduated with a degree in English Literature, according to TheNetline.

2. She’s East African.

Dhowre is of Somali descent according to Face2FaceAfrica. Her mother, Maryam Egal, now lives in Burnaby, British Columbia. It’s unclear where she was born, but a glance at her Instagram account shows that she and her husband enjoy gallivanting across the globe.

3. She’s a beauty queen.

Speaking of Canada, Dhowre was crowned Miss Vancouver in 2014, according to The Sun.

Dhowre's Prince Charming, of course, is a British actor with roots in West Africa (his father was from Sierra Leone and his mother was from Ghana). And it looks like she and her new husband spend the majority of their time in his native United Kingdom.

4. She believes in service.

Dhowre doesn’t reveal a lot about herself on her social media accounts, and she hasn’t done many interviews. But she isn’t shy about her community service and environmental efforts.

“The community and issues blew us away. So proud to be able to say we’re partnering with @ifadnews and @glblctzn to eradicate poverty and hunger. As proud Africans, we promise to work toward a stronger future for our continent,” she wrote in a post accompanied by a photo of her warmly smiling with a little girl.

In another post she shared from Costa Rica, she proudly shows off a baby mangrove tree after participating in reforesting efforts on Chira Island.

5. She met Elba in Canada.

The two met in Canada while Elba was shooting The Mountain Between Us, a love story also starring Kate Winslet. Elba thinks the way he met his wife was very unique and surreal.

“Falling in love while making a movie about falling in love is pretty special,” he told People.

The duo made their debut when Dhowre accompanied Elba on the red carpet at Toronto International Film Festival. Apparently, it was quite a shock to those who knew Elba and hopeful ladies everywhere. “It definitely got noticed because I try to keep my personal life different,” he said.
