The LGBTQ community in Houston is grieving the death of Tracy Single, a Black transgender woman, who was found dead in a gas station parking lot on July 30.

According to the Human Rights Campaign, the 22-year-old New Orleans native is the 16th transgender person and 15th trans woman of color to be violently killed this year. Reportedly, with the help of Houston LGBTQ activists, it took two weeks for law enforcement to identify Single. An autopsy revealed the cause of death to be homicide.

“We are devastated by the loss of Tracy,” Houston Police Department Sergeant Alexa Magnan said. “We’re here and we are pursuing every lead in this case to try to bring justice for Tracy.”

Magnan, who works closely with the city’s LGBTQ community, said the threat of violence against transgender people is “consistent” every year, adding that trans women of color are “victimized at much higher rates.”

The Philadelphia Tribune reports that Houston Police Department officials are receiving mandatory training to be better equipped in working with transgender Houstonians.

Last week, Houston honored Single by lighting City Hall and bridges over Hwy 59 in the colors of the transgender flag: blue, white and purple.

Police in Dallas are still investigating the murders of Muhlaysia Booker and Chynal Lindsey, two Black transgender women who were killed earlier this summer.
